How to choose an ABA provider

Questions families can ask when comparing ABA providers, including supervision, goals, communication, staffing, and family involvement.

Choosing an ABA provider is about fit, not just availability. Families should understand who supervises the program, how goals are chosen, how progress is shared, and how the provider handles concerns. A good provider should welcome questions.

Ask about supervision

Ask:

  • Who is the supervising clinician?
  • How often will they observe sessions?
  • How often will we meet with them?
  • Who should we contact with concerns?

Supervision matters because the plan should be adjusted as the learner changes.

Ask about goals

Ask how goals are selected. The provider should consider assessment results, caregiver priorities, safety, communication, independence, and quality of life.

Be cautious if every child appears to receive the same goal list.

Ask about communication

Families should know how progress will be shared. That may include regular meetings, written updates, data summaries, or care-team calls.

Ask how the provider communicates when something is not working. Good communication is especially important during the first few months.

Ask about staff fit

Ask:

  • Who will work with my child?
  • What training do they receive?
  • What happens if staffing changes?
  • How do you match staff to family needs?

Consistency is not always perfect, but the provider should have a plan.

Trust your questions

Families do not need to know every technical term before choosing a provider. If the answers are confusing, ask for plain language. If a provider cannot explain the plan clearly, that is useful information.
